Mechanical Ventilation

A Brief Foreword to This Section

Mechanical ventilation training required to function as a barely-supervised after-hours junior ICU trainee should be available in three major forms:

  • from easily accessible textbooks;

  • from detailed orientation programs and training courses;

  • from helpful senior staff with an interest in teaching.

At the earliest stages of my training, none of the above were available to me. The notes offered below are the outcome of the author's autodidactic efforts. As such, they have significant limitations. Wherever possible, references to better resources are made available. Though previously rich with disease-specific information and evidence-based material, this section has been emptied of all such "advanced" content - it has migrated to the Required Reading section on the same topic. Much of it was useful for exam revision, and has been associated with the relevant CICM Fellowship Exam SAQs.
